HDR Video…Coming Soon.

I am in the process of polishing a workflow and system to shooting and editing HDR video. It will be used on an upcoming feature film venture. Here’s a sneak peak at our progress:

Nice Richard! I’m really interested in your workflow.

    Yeah,

Put me in as the newbie looking to learn this very unique and interesting form of video and workflow.

Dude, this looks very tacky just as well as most HDR images.

HDR should be part of natural photography workflow and adjusting the dynamic range within reasonable limits rather than make it look like a primary school kid put +200% saturation and plastic wrap on it, so I hope this is a joke.

Apart from the above I’ve found this blog very resourceful.

@JR: Yes, this very simple demo is over the top, but it is just showing that it can be done. Should it be done all the time? No. But there are some stories that could better be told with this particular look. And speaking of looks, this is only one…there are literally thousands of variations and looks that can be achieved using this process. This process is not achieved using added saturation and “plastic wrap,” but rather 2 cameras and a beam splitter providing varied exposures to use in HDR tone-mapping. Thanks for watching and for the kudos on the rest of the blog!

@Rich: Yeah I was hoping and guessing so!
I have seen HDR videos made with the beam splitter technique, very interesting. Although I would rather have a sensor that can handle the full range without having to use a beam splitter instead :P

@JR: Actually, the 5d with my Crooked Path Flat picture style does that quite well. We’ve found that using that picture style and applying HDR tone mapping to the resulting picture works too, but not in all lighting scenarios.
