Hi there. I think what you guys are doing here is great. I had a question about the Sony Super35 mm and your custom flat profiles. Have you created any flat profiles for anyone using the FS-100 and capturing through a Atomo Ninja capture system? Your flat method addresses 8 bit but could there be one for people capturing in proress 422 through HDMI? Thank you for your insights so far. You have really helped me wrap my head around this whole flat thing. Cheers.

Hi Daniel, the flat profiles do the same thing to the internal recordings as they do with an Atomos Ninja. Either way, you will be dealing with 8 bit as it does not send better than that over hdmi. The differnce between 8bit 4:2:0 and 8bit 4:2:2 are virtually indistinguishable from each other when it comes to color grading. The only benefit to 4:2:2 8bit is slightly better keying. But the real benefit to Atomos recording is the less-compressed video which helps minimize compression artifacts and also it isn’t as taxing on your system (avchd is hard on computers). But for the purposes of color grading the ninja recording in my opinion is pointless. Where you really see the difference is 8bit (256 levels of black to white) and 10bit (1026 levels).
